Monoceratosaurus
This creature is designed to aid the scientists in exploration of the Purple planet. It has a huge horn on its head with witch it loosens the soil to dig tunnels. Its secondary pair of limbs dig the soil away while the primary legs keep it in balance. The Monoceratosaurus is able of reaching speeds of 200km/h and making impressive jumps of 20m in height. Its infrared sensors make it possible to detect threats and it can feed of the acid flora of the Purple planet.
I solve most of my design problems in my sketchbook using a simple Bic pen, as can be seen in the additional sketches. For me as a 2D artist it is easier to solve problems in 2d first and then move into 3d. So low tech first than 3d.
Since this is a personal project and I did not have to report to a client, it was sufficient to have the ideation sketches. Normally I would expand the ideation stage with some thumbnails to provide more options for the client. However I already knew what I wanted to accomplish hence the limited ideation phase.
This project expanded from creature design only, to prop design as well.
Monoceratosaurus is named after its function to plow the earth. It uses its massive horn to dig into the earth, while the back legs support the weight the front paws dig the soil away. Monoceratosaurus makes tunnels in order to get to the prey. These beasts are ridden by hunters who hunt prey that hide underground. Prey digs into the ground but can’t go very far and here is where Monoceratosaurus comes into play, they go after the prey digging further and deeper and reaching by then an exhausted prey. The hunters come after Monoceratosaurus and finish the job.
In This personal project I wanted to brush up my creature design skills. While doing so I adapted a new workflow involving Zbrush.
